Biography[]
Early Life[]
Jenks was born on 18 September 1993 in Fort Riley, Kansas, though he mainly grew up in Columbia, South Carolina and New York City, New York, living in Columbia during the school year while spending his breaks from school with his grandmother, who lived in the Queens borough of New York City. His mother worked in the military and his father owned a truck business. Jenks was introduced to music production and rapping by his uncle Dwight, who taught him how to use the production software FL Studio and in his teenage years, he would begin releasing music under the name Pi'erre Bourne. He would release multiple mixtapes around this time, with 3 in the year 2010.
Jenks would attend the SAE Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, USA for sound engineering, where he would meet his mentor DJ Burn One, who would heavily influence his production style. While in college he released a mixtape in 2012 and an EP in 2014. After graduating from SAE in 2015, Jenks would remain in the Atlanta area and began working as an audio engineer at Epic Records.
Career Beginnings (2016)[]
After a year working for them as an engineer, Jenks quit his job with them in 2016, largely to spend more time pursuing his career as a solo artist and producer. Throughout 2016, Jenks released a trilogy of mixtapes all called The Life of Pi'erre. He also made connections with artists such as Young Nudy and Trippie Redd and producers like Metro Boomin, whom would all become his frequent collaborators.
Rise to Prominence (2017-2018)[]
Jenks would begin to gain increased attention for his work as a producer for his work with artists like Young Nudy and Trippie Redd. In 2017, Jenks began working with Atlanta rapper Playboi Carti and produced his popular 2017 singles "wokeuplikethis*" (featuring rapper Lil Uzi Vert) and "Magnolia". His producer tag, a sample of actor Jamie Foxx saying "Yo Pierre, you wanna come here (laugh)" also became a viral meme around this time. In 2017, he also produced for artists like Young Nudy, Trippie Redd, Gunna, Duwap Kaine, 21 Savage and UnoTheActivist.
He also gained further attention for his work as a solo artist with singles such as "Hacked My Instagram" (a snippet of which had been featured in the music video for "Magnolia") and "History".
In 2018, he executive produced Playboi Carti's debut album Die Lit, which was released on 11 May 2018, also serving as the main producer of the album. That year, he released a new mixtape studio album in December, which was a collaborative project with fellow producer Cardo entitled Pi'erre & Cardo's Wild Adventure.
Production Style[]
Jenks' beats tend to feature melodies that are reminiscent of retro video game soundtracks. For melodies, he often uses sounds like organs, synth pads, plucks, synth brasses, and flute sounds. His beats have also become more melodically maximalist, with him using an increased number of melodic sounds on more recent tracks. He has also become well-known for his custom drum sounds that have become staples in modern trap production. He is also known for using sound effects such as vocal chants and explosions as semi-percussive sounds to fill some of the rhytmic spaces in his beats.
